In March 2017, the Star Brewery’s gallery space was taken over by Alex Grey, a Lewes-based artist, curator and writer, and renamed Martyrs’ Gallery and Project Space. The new name refers to Lewes’s 17 Protestant Martyrs, whose deaths are commemorated annually at the town’s famous Bonfire celebrations. Martyrs’ offers a rolling programme of month-long exhibitions and installations, and specialises in challenging and experimental art driven by the critical practice of professional artists. The gallery also hosts 3-4 artists-in-residence per year, plus a writer-in-residence and an ongoing programme of talks, events and workshops, and plays an active role in Lewes’s thriving creative community. For up-to-date information and details of the current exhibition, visit www.martyrs.gallery or follow the gallery on Twitter and Facebook.
